Blockchain Sets The Boundary On AI-Generated Content
Deep fakes, beware! Denmark is looking over your shoulder.
Wait a second… who put your face on that incriminating video? How is your voice saying words that you’ve never spoken? And are you helpless in the face of AI-generated deep fakes? Not anymore. Blockchain can help you put some boundaries in place.
Denmark’s Trademark:
In a groundbreaking piece of legislation, Denmark has passed a critical copyright bill in parliament, which ensures that the ownership of a Danish citizen’s personal likeness remains solely in his or her hands.
Why is it necessary? In the AI-era, several individuals have been appalled to discover fake rip-offs of their likeness online, particularly when celebrity likenesses are used to endorse a product or service. This new law gives individual citizens the complete authority to submit a request or notice to any platform or entity that uses the individual’s digital persona without their explicit authorization. The law has far deeper ramifications. Denmark is poised to assume EU presidency, as it could influence AI regulation across the European Union.
Fake News Is A Reality.
Whether we like it or not, fake news is a part of the modern mediascape. But is it a new phenomenon? Not really. What is new about it is that it is no longer simply propaganda generated by malicious human hydra. It’s now auto-generated by Artificial Intelligence, and it can be insidious.
Content generation is one side of the coin. While in the past, a picture was proof of the pudding, that’s no longer the case. Thanks to AI, you can now digitally manipulate photographs, videos and even a voice, to sound like someone else.
AI has eroded the trust we placed in “proof”. While fake news is usually used to create chaos and sensational headlines, one can also manipulate it to deliberately malign a person’s reputation, especially if its online. That’s why, in 2025, netizens need to become detectives, using a high degree of discernment to determine what is real and what is fake.
The Bot Plot:
The flip side of the coin is distribution. A bot army can spiral fake news at an exponential level, particularly across social media networks. While regulation helps and fact-checking is essential, the bottom line is that fake news often sounds so authentic that it slips through the cracks.
Bots are not inherently “bad”. In fact, at some level or another, we all interact with bots in various aspects of our daily lives. But when bots are specifically programmed to push a certain agenda or a piece of false propaganda into the news stream, they are very effective – and very damaging.
It doesn’t take long for bots to ensure that a piece of content goes viral. Content that has been concocted to stir up a toxic cocktail can be extremely detrimental.
Can Blockchain Block Fake Content?
Absolutely! Blockchain is one of the strongest ways to combat AI generated fake content. In fact, the way blockchain ascertains authenticity is by retaining the metadata of the authentic creative. This allows it to fact-check and verify it against the original. Metadata allows you to check whether a visual or audio file has been cooked up and combats deepfakes that have pervaded the system. It protects the content’s integrity and an artist’s credibility in the process.
Metadata Magic:
Metadata is a crucial tool to determine a piece of content’s origins, timestamp, and any changes that might have been made to it. Whether you’re a journalist or a musician, blockchain allows you to digitally sign your work. This acts like a thumbprint, which authenticates a piece of content as original and yours.
The beauty of a blockchain network is that each node in the chain individually authenticates a piece of content. Together, the nodes form a network of checkpoints that act as a barrier against fake news. The original content that has been uploaded to a blockchain is immutable, making it impossible for someone to tamper with it, without the modification showing up on the record.
Beyond Borders:
Blockchain transcends borders. In fact, the very notion of a blockchain is a distributed network of nodes across the planet. Therefore, it becomes much easier and more efficient to use blockchain to create systems that authenticate and verify news internationally, infusing trust in the process.
False propaganda is an age-old phenomenon. But that doesn’t mean we allow it to fester unchecked. AI-generated fake news and content is a burgeoning underbelly, but blockchain can help to trim the fat and keep things real. In a world that’s already volatile, stemming the tide of fake content is vital to ensure that matters don’t spiral out of control.
